Goodbye, DA

2 min read

I had to retype this journal again, because DA ate my last one. Shocker.

Anyway, thanks to the disaster that is Eclipse, my gallery is now inactive. Links to other sites where I post content is at the end of this journal. I'll be keeping some of my pictures online for now, but don't count on them staying for long. Thanks to all of you who watched me for so many years, but it's time for me to move on.

I've already talked at length about my disdain for Eclipse (and so has everyone else), but it's clear that's pretty pointless. The only thing worth mentioning is that since the "Watch" box is so sluggish and it takes MUCH longer for me to sift through messages, I will likely be un-watching a number of people around here. Don't take it personally; I simply do not have enough time to wade through the large volume of messages with this new UI, especially since the new menu bar doesn't even show you how many messages you have, anymore. I also hate how Eclipse refreshes and screen and resizes thumbnails after removing each notification, so it's easy to mis-click. At least for me, multi-select is broken, and has been since the last time I tried Eclipse months ago. Clearly, there was no usability review with this design, and it won't be fixed.

Also, as I'm typing this journal, the UI keeps freezing every few seconds, the content is overflowing the screen, and URL links keep extending to multiple lines. I can't believe this design has been in development for about two years. A high school dropout should be able to write better code that this.

Assuming DA doesn't auto-ban me for mentioning competitors, you can find me here:

Note: I do not use "conventional" social media and instant messagers, such as Twitter, Facebook, Discord, etc. I only post to my web site, furry gallery sites, and use e-mail.

Yeah, I know it was released in Japan earlier, but here in the USA it was officially launched 20 years ago, on Sept 9, 1999.  It was one of the few systems I bought on launch day, and I never regret it.  Even with all the nostalgia, it's still very much underrated.  Oh, and it still works great, despite its age... and clunky controller.  8)

20 years.  Ouch.

Man, I miss when computers were fun.  Thank goodness these old consoles can be expected to still work when they're properly cared for, and can still be enjoyed.  Can't say the same about modern stuff.

Yeah, I'm old, and getting more nostalgic by the day.  My new hobby is making my own 8-bit computer from scratch (on paper, at least).  That includes my own CPU ISA and everything.  If I get anything significant finished, I might spill some more details, but first I need to do some simulations since I don't have the time to learn FPGA stuff.

It's probably just a coincidence, but I went on vacation yesterday and logged into my DA account on a different computer today.  When I did, I was presented with the new Eclipse UI.  Since I'm not a Core member, this is the first time I've been able to really test it out.

My God... what a fucking disaster.

I'll refrain from a full critique.  Over the last few months, there's been a major backlash of negative community feedback with regards to Eclipse, and DA has made it perfectly clear that they don't give a damn.  My own comments won't change anything.  All I'll say is that this new UI UX is about the slowest, buggiest, and most frustrating thing I've used on any gallery web site.  The site won't even tell me how many messages I have, the browser "Back" button is completely useless, and deleting messages is painfully, abysmally slow with tons of dynamic loading everywhere.  DA has gone full retard following every UX fashion trend out there, and they've completely broken everything that wasn't broken already.  They've fully decided that DA shouldn't be built with documents (as the WWW is supposed to be done), and now it's an "app."  They have absolutely no idea how to code anything.  It's a trainwreck.

All the basics are wrong, and it's not even worth using the site, let alone submitting art.

Yes, I'm aware that I can use the "old" site for now, but it's inevitable that it will be disabled in the future and Eclipse will be the only choice.  Any time a site "improves their experience", it's only a matter of time before they ram it down your throat.  Frankly, I don't care anymore.

About a year and a half ago, I already decided to stop uploading any new art after they revealed their new TOS, which I considered unreasonable.  Now, with Eclipse coming, I'm considering just deleting my gallery and unwatching everyone I can follow on some other site.  Sorry, but the new UI is way too sluggish, frustrating, and time wasting.  I don't want to bother using this crap when I can spend my time on another site that isn't garbage.

If you like my art, be sure to download it now, as I'll make a decision how much I want to remove in a week or two.  I'll probably leave my model sheets up, since there are still people who need them for commission work, at least for now.  I'll post links to some of the other sites I post my art, if you want to keep up with my stuff.

Sorry, but this is the last straw.  I have multiple galleries on the Internet, so losing one of them is no big deal for me.  I have very low tolerances for bad design, and Eclipse is one of the worst I've seen.  DA isn't worth using anymore.

So... I guess I'm now officially middle-aged.  8)

I'm really proud of how well I've done with my diet over the last year, so you'd better believe I'll be taking a cheat day and pigging out on cake today!

INTJ-A (Architect)

I just had to take this test after seeing Jacksepticeye do it.  Well, even if stuff like this is just for fun, the result is hardly a surprise.  I already knew I'm INTJ, but what I didn't know is how few people were like this (I thought it was closer to 5-10%, not a mere 2%).

It goes for Wac as much as it does for me, I suppose.  There's no way he would have gotten married and had kids if Tawny hadn't beat him over the head with a club!

I should take this test for most of my characters!

Anyway, the only thing I can point out to the general public is that massive introverts are not assholes by nature.  It's not our intention to be mean.  We just care more about proper analysis of a situation than peoples' feelings, so we're blunt with the truth... that most people don't want.

Go easy on us, 'kay?  We're not jerks, we're just lunkheads!  Σ8`)
